This auction offers a nice 1863 Queen Victoria United Kingdom large brown copper cent. This coin has nice detail considering it circulated among the working class during the industrial revolution. This date of this coin marked a difficult time not only close to home with Victoria but across the ocean. Having just lost her beloved husband Prince Albert (Aka Bertie the year before), she mourned as the United States fought right in the thick of its most deadly war - The Civil War - due west across across the Atlantic horizon.
The provenance of this coin is that it originated from a multigenerational coin collection in my family. As early as 1910 through the 1960’s, bank tellers kindly set aside collectible coins for my father and grandfather. The examples they sought were denominations that were then no longer minted; especially as gold varied out in the early 1930's. As such, my father and grandfather sought coins throughout banks in Worcester, Middlesex and Berkshire counties (in Massachusetts). My grandfather procured this coin in the early 1930's, when many collectors hoarded precious metals for reasons such as the Great Depression.
This coin is a great investment.
