    Description

Circa 1844 Great Britain Bi-Metallic "ONE PENNY MODEL" Pattern Token, Medal Turn
These small 20 mm tokens are technically pattern coins and could also be called tokens. Joseph Moore is the designer of this clever concept coin created to replace the heavy copper pennies that circulated in Great Britain throughout the 1800s.
The idea was to add enough silver in the center plug to equal the weight of the copper in the large penny coins. Back then, coins had intrinsic value, meaning the amount of whatever metal equaled the face value stated on each coin. The concept obviously did not live to see implementation, although enough were struck that collectors can own a nice example without breaking the bank.
I believe that this piece is the version with the zinc-nickel center, with a copper ring.  The weight is 3.5 grams with a diameter of approximately 22 mm. The die orientation is medal alignment.
